The producers of ABC-TV’s highly popular "Hootenanny"
folk music weekly series came to UT to film two shows.
Future UT President Dr. Ed Boling and UT Administrator
Paul Sherbakoff succeeded in securing The Cumberland Trio
an audition before Fred Weintraub, Hootenanny’s talent
director, who also was Peter, Paul & Mary’s manager
and owner of the Greenwich Village folk mecca, The Bitter
End.
He
liked The Cumberland Trio’s musical talent and decided
that the Trio would perform "Ride
Up", their popular foot-stomping spiritual that
blended both folk and bluegrass genres. Fortunately the
show was filmed, as the raucous standing ovation from
the home town audience at their performance’s beginning
caused delays. Jack Linkletter, the host, pleaded with
the audience for control, but "Ride
Up" brought them to their feet again to wildly
applaud their local favorites.

The
list of famous acts appearing on the UT "Hoots"
included the legendary Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys,
acoustic folk/blues guitar virtuoso Doc Watson, country comedy
duo Homer & Jethro, Kenny Rogers (then with the New Christy
Minstrels), Glen Campbell (staff bass player and guitarist),
jazz legend Pete Fountain, The Serendipity Singers and the
Simon Sisters (including Carly). The Trio had found their
niche in the folk music world and now appeared ready for national
success. |
