Behind The Scenes Story
The Live Video Clips

Thanks to Paul Surratt of Los Angeles, The Cumberland Trio has obtained a clear video of the first half of the ABC-TV Hootenanny broadcast filmed at The University Of Tennessee, Knoxville, on January 21, 1964! The good news is that the Trio is featured in close-ups in the introductions of all the acts appearing as we all sang the show's theme song, "Hootenanny Saturday Night," along with the incredibly enthusiastic UT audience. The not so good news is that the Trio's performance of "Ride Up," which you can hear in the clips below, was in the second half of the show, so we don't have that in video for fans YET.

Take a peek at the video clips of all the performers singing the theme song, with several shots of the UT students who were in attendance singing along. The quest will never end, nor will the MUSIC!

Please note Quicktime player is required to view the clips. It is available for free from the Apple web site.

The Live Audio Clips

Thanks to Tom Kilpatick's wonderful dad, Joe Kilpatrick's foresight, wisdom and his trusty little Wollensak reel-to-reel tape recorder, you can now experience the LIVE audio of the original broadcast of The Cumberland Trio's January 21, 1964 performance on ABC-TV Hootenanny filmed at the Trio's own University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

What You Will Hear...

First you will hear the great Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys finishing their song. Then the sound cuts to "Hoot" M.C. Jack Linkletter, who promos the next segment of the show (including The Cumberland Trio). Then there is a short "bleep" where Tom's dad Joe edited out the commercials.

Next the great Jethro Burns of Homer & Jethro introduces The Cumberland Trio. The audience just explodes with a roar of applause that lasts over 25 seconds before the Trio can get into its song. THANKS to all of the fans who were there for that incredible moment!

Then as the applause finally dies down, the Trio performs "Ride Up" and flat nail it! Andy's solo vocals and banjo playing were incredible under that pressure. It all lasts just 3 minutes and 38 seconds, but is embedded in the memories of Andy, Jim, Tom & Jerre like it was yesterday.

It was really a "Hoot!" Listen, enjoy and let the Trio know what you think about this incredible recording.
